Spirits of Life
Our bench grew up inside Buddhist work: stupas, vajras, conch shells, the whole Himalayan vocabulary. But a pair of silversmith's hands should not belong to one tradition alone.
So we went north. Past the edge of what we already knew how to make, into the deep forest, looking for the lives that were there long before anyone arrived to name them — not animals to decorate a ring with, but lives old enough to be owed something. Awe is the honest word for it.
Spirits of Life is what came back. Every piece in it takes months to carry from first sketch to finished silver, because there is no pattern book for something you had to go that far to find.
What came back this time was not a deer. It was a deer spirit — older, quieter, and looking straight at you.
1. Antlers made of knotwork, not of bone. This is the decision the whole ring rests on. Instead of carving antlers, we let them grow as gold — an openwork Norse knot sweeping back across the crown of the ring, branching and looping and closing on itself the way a real rack branches. Pierced right through, gilded in 24K gold, and left standing proud of the silver. From the front the stag wears a crown. From above it is pure interlace. Nothing about it is literal, and that is exactly why it reads as a spirit rather than an animal.
2. Gold in the eyes. Two points of 24K gold, and the face comes alive. Everything else on the head is darkened silver, so the eyes are the only place light collects — the finishing stroke, the thing that turns a carving into a gaze. Cover them with a fingertip and the ring goes quiet. Uncover them and something is looking back.
3. The beard, one strand at a time. Under the throat the ruff falls in long carved strands, each cut separately, layered and lifted so the fur has direction and weight. This is done under a 40× microscope — at normal magnification the strands simply cannot be separated. It is the slowest stage of the piece and the reason the animal looks warm rather than cast.
4. Runework along both sides. The shoulders carry old Norse interlace — beasts folding through their own bodies, carved deep and oxidised so the shadow stays in the line — with runic marks worked into the field and touched with gold. Framed top and bottom by rows of tiny gilded beads, the way a Viking-age panel would be bordered.
5. Gold under the animal. A gilded scroll cradles the deer's chest from below and runs out to the shoulders of the band, so the silver figure sits in a line of gold rather than ending against the metal. It is what stops the head from floating.
6. Ears back, not decorative. The ears are laid flat against the skull, the way a deer holds them the moment before it decides whether to run. A small thing. It is the difference between an ornament and an animal that has noticed you.
7. Weight you can feel. 24.5 g of silver in a ring 24 mm tall — heavy in the hand, deliberately. A forest spirit should not feel like foil.
The Meaning
In the north the stag stands at the centre of things. It walks between the world of people and the world that was here first, and in the old stories it is never hunted successfully — it appears, it is followed, and it leads the follower somewhere they would not have found alone.
It is also the animal of renewal. A stag drops its antlers every year and grows them back larger, bone rebuilt from nothing, season after season. Loss and return, written into the body of the animal.
So we gave this one a crown that is not bone at all, but an endless knot: a line with no beginning and no end, growing where the antlers should be. What it says is simple enough. What you lose, you grow back. And it comes back bigger.
May you shed what the season takes, and grow it back stronger.
Materials & craft
S925 sterling silver, carved by hand. Gold accents are traditional 24K fire-gilding, bonded into the silver at around 900 °C, not plated. Stones are natural and called by their real names.
Every piece is designed and handmade in China and finished by hand under a 40× microscope. How fire-gilding works

How every piece is made
The gold on every piece goes through four stages, each one done by hand.
Swipe to follow each stage

Gold leaf, laid by hand
The gold is 24K leaf, thick enough to pick up with tweezers. It is laid onto the silver in small pieces, one section of the carving at a time, and pressed down with a burnisher.

Cut under a 40× microscope
Every line is cut with a hand graver. The finest parts, an eye, a whisker, the edge where gold meets silver, are worked under a 40× microscope, where a slip of a tenth of a millimetre would show.

Gold only where it belongs
The leaf is worked along each scroll until it follows the carving exactly. Gold goes only where the design asks for it. The rest of the silver is left bare, to be darkened later so the carving reads.

Fused by fire at 900°C
Then the torch. At around 900°C, below gold's melting point of 1063°C, the leaf bonds into the silver and becomes part of it. The heat is judged by eye, one area at a time: too cool and the gold lifts later, too hot and the carving underneath is lost.
Afterwards every gilded edge is cut again under the microscope. This is fire-gilding, not ordinary gold plating.

Frequently asked questions
How long does delivery take?
Every piece is held in stock and ships within 1–3 business days (engraved pieces need about 3 more). Delivery with YunExpress then takes 5–8 business days, so most orders arrive within about two weeks. We email your tracking number as soon as the package leaves us.
Will I have to pay import duties or taxes?
No. We pay import duties, taxes and customs fees for every country we ship to. The total at checkout is the total you pay. If a carrier ever asks you for duty, don't pay it; email us and we will settle it.
What is fire-gilding, and how is it different from gold plating?
Gold foil is fused into the sterling silver by heat at around 900°C, then every edge is re-cut by hand under a 40× microscope. The gold becomes part of the piece, a real weight of 24K gold rather than the thin film of ordinary gold plating, so it does not lift, flake or wear thin. More on fire-gilding
Why is the silver dark in places?
The dark recesses are oxidation, added on purpose so the carving reads clearly. It is not tarnish. A soft dry cloth on the raised surfaces is all the cleaning it needs; please don't use silver dip or polishing compound, which would strip the shading.
Can I return or exchange a piece?
Yes. Email us within 30 days of delivery and you can return a piece in the condition you received it for a full refund, with no restocking fee. Rings can be exchanged for another size within 30 days. Engraved pieces, consecrated pieces and the Nine-Palace Zodiac Amulet are final sale unless they arrive faulty, damaged or not what you ordered. Refund policy
How do I find my ring size?
Measure the finger you will wear it on, at the end of the day, and make sure the size clears your knuckle. Our ring size guide has a US size chart and two easy ways to measure at home.
Can I wear it in water?
It depends on the piece. Pieces set with natural stones should come off before swimming or bathing and be wiped dry after contact with water. Each product page lists its stones and its own care notes.
How can I pay?
Checkout is through PayPal, where you can pay with your PayPal balance or with a credit or debit card. Prices are in US dollars.
