Pure Silver — S925 sterling silver · all sixteen garnets, hand-set.
Nothing is simplified. The only thing missing is the gold. Undressed like this, the piece has nowhere to hide: what holds it up is the cutting.

Genesis Fire-Gilded — S925 sterling silver · all sixteen garnets, hand-set · 24K gold fused into the surface at 900°C.
Gold in the garuda's beak and flames, along every lotus petal, around every beaded collar. Fourteen days of bench work in every piece — the gold is fired on in stages and every line is then re-cut by hand, and neither half of that can be hurried.

There is an easier version of this pendant. Cast the sixteen makara heads instead of carving them. Use eight stones instead of sixteen — nobody counts. Leave the back flat; it sits against the chest anyway.

Every one of those doors was open. We shut all of them — not out of romance, but because a bench that only ever works to the level the market checks will, in a few years, no longer be able to work any higher. Skill is not stored. It is used at full stretch, or it quietly recedes.

So: fifty millimetres square, thirty-nine grams. Four complete five-pronged vajras meeting at right angles. Sixteen makara heads, a natural garnet set in every one. A garuda at the crossing, on four lotus thrones. Carved front, back and edge. Nothing on it repeated by a machine.

Four vajras, not one cross. A vishvavajra is two complete vajras laid through one another, so each of the four arms is a full five-pronged head — and the back is carved to the same standard as the face. Sixteen millimetres of real depth, worked on every surface and edge. There is no angle at which it looks unfinished.

Sixteen makara, sixteen garnets. Every prong is a makara: jaws open, snout curling back on itself, brow and scale cut in. Each one holds a natural garnet, set by hand after the carving was finished — the harder order of work, and the only one that lets the setting follow the carving instead of the reverse. This is where the hours go.

The garuda at the crossing. Beak driving down in a hard wedge, flames breaking from the head on every side, cut in high relief and undercut so shadow gathers behind it. In the gilded edition the beak and the flames come up in gold, and every other line on the piece starts pointing at them.

Four lotus thrones. Nothing sacred is ever set down on bare ground, so the centre of this piece is not a joint — it is a seat, and it is seated on four sides at once. Fine beading rings every collar; without it, this much carving would collapse into noise.

Symmetry you can check. Turn it ninety degrees and it matches itself. Easy to write, brutal to do by hand: one makara half a millimetre off its opposite and the eye catches it immediately. Four arms had to agree with each other four times.

Carried properly. The bail is scrolled, beaded and cut to take a heavy chain — the part most makers buy in, we carved. At 39 g across 50 mm it hangs dead flat and stays where it is put.

The Meaning

A single vajra is indestructibility pointed one way. Cross two and it points four ways at once, with nothing left open behind you. In Buddhist cosmology the vishvavajra lies beneath Mount Meru at the base of the universe — the foundation nothing can shift — and it belongs to Amoghasiddhi, the buddha of all-accomplishing wisdom, whose quality is fearlessness and whose work is action carried through to the end. Karma means action. That is why the implement carries the name.

The garuda at its centre is the one who eats poison: hatched already able to fly, it swallows venom and is not harmed, which is why it is called on against the harms that work from the inside. The lotus beneath him says the rest — it grows out of mud and comes up clean.

Ground that cannot be moved. Guarded by what cannot be poisoned. Seated on what came up clean.

May you stand on ground nothing can shift, and may nothing reach you from a direction you left open.

Materials & craft

S925 sterling silver, carved by hand. Gold accents are traditional 24K fire-gilding, bonded into the silver at around 900 °C, not plated. Stones are natural and called by their real names.

Every piece is designed and handmade in China and finished by hand under a 40× microscope. How fire-gilding works

How every piece is made

The gold on every piece goes through four stages, each one done by hand.

Swipe to follow each stage

Laying 24K gold leaf onto a hand-carved sterling silver bangle with tweezers
01

Gold leaf, laid by hand

The gold is 24K leaf, thick enough to pick up with tweezers. It is laid onto the silver in small pieces, one section of the carving at a time, and pressed down with a burnisher.

02

Cut under a 40× microscope

Every line is cut with a hand graver. The finest parts, an eye, a whisker, the edge where gold meets silver, are worked under a 40× microscope, where a slip of a tenth of a millimetre would show.

03

Gold only where it belongs

The leaf is worked along each scroll until it follows the carving exactly. Gold goes only where the design asks for it. The rest of the silver is left bare, to be darkened later so the carving reads.

04

Fused by fire at 900°C

Then the torch. At around 900°C, below gold's melting point of 1063°C, the leaf bonds into the silver and becomes part of it. The heat is judged by eye, one area at a time: too cool and the gold lifts later, too hot and the carving underneath is lost.

Afterwards every gilded edge is cut again under the microscope. This is fire-gilding, not ordinary gold plating.

Frequently asked questions

How long does delivery take?

Every piece is held in stock and ships within 1–3 business days (engraved pieces need about 3 more). Delivery with YunExpress then takes 5–8 business days, so most orders arrive within about two weeks. We email your tracking number as soon as the package leaves us.

Will I have to pay import duties or taxes?

No. We pay import duties, taxes and customs fees for every country we ship to. The total at checkout is the total you pay. If a carrier ever asks you for duty, don't pay it; email us and we will settle it.

What is fire-gilding, and how is it different from gold plating?

Gold foil is fused into the sterling silver by heat at around 900°C, then every edge is re-cut by hand under a 40× microscope. The gold becomes part of the piece, a real weight of 24K gold rather than the thin film of ordinary gold plating, so it does not lift, flake or wear thin. More on fire-gilding

Why is the silver dark in places?

The dark recesses are oxidation, added on purpose so the carving reads clearly. It is not tarnish. A soft dry cloth on the raised surfaces is all the cleaning it needs; please don't use silver dip or polishing compound, which would strip the shading.

Can I return or exchange a piece?

Yes. Email us within 30 days of delivery and you can return a piece in the condition you received it for a full refund, with no restocking fee. Rings can be exchanged for another size within 30 days. Engraved pieces, consecrated pieces and the Nine-Palace Zodiac Amulet are final sale unless they arrive faulty, damaged or not what you ordered. Refund policy

How do I find my ring size?

Measure the finger you will wear it on, at the end of the day, and make sure the size clears your knuckle. Our ring size guide has a US size chart and two easy ways to measure at home.

Can I wear it in water?

It depends on the piece. Pieces set with natural stones should come off before swimming or bathing and be wiped dry after contact with water. Each product page lists its stones and its own care notes.

How can I pay?

Checkout is through PayPal, where you can pay with your PayPal balance or with a credit or debit card. Prices are in US dollars.
