Pure Silver Edition
S925 sterling silver · eight natural garnets, hand-set.

Every cut, prong and feature of the garuda is identical to the gilded edition; only the gold is absent. There is nowhere for the workmanship to hide. No bright surface to soften a line and no gold to pull the eye away from the carving. What remains is the bench work itself, in darkened silver.

24K Fire-Gilded Edition
S925 sterling silver · eight natural garnets, hand-set · 24K gold, traditionally fire-gilded.

Gold is worked into the flames around the garuda, across the lotus petals and down into the roots of the prongs. It is bonded to the silver by heat: not ordinary gold plating. Against the darkened silver, the garuda comes forward the way a figure emerges from the shadow of a shrine wall.

This is not a piece of jewellery that borrowed its shape from a ritual object. It is the ritual form itself, built at a size that can be worn: 60 millimetres from tip to tip, ten fully finished prongs, 33 grams of silver, and proportions taken from the implement rather than from a jeweller’s idea of it.

Stand it upright and it remains what it has always been. Hang it from a chain and nothing about the form has to change.

What the Work Reveals

Ten prongs, all ten finished. Five above and five below. At each end, four outer prongs rise as makara heads—snouts curling back, jaws open—and close around one straight central spike. The two ends mirror one another. Turn the pendant over and the work continues.

Proportions taken from the ritual form. The relationship between shaft and heads, the height of the collars and the set of the prongs follow the implement, not a jewellery sketch. It is the difference between something that resembles a vajra and something a practitioner recognises as one.

The garuda at the waist. Where a ritual vajra often carries a plain central sphere, this one bears the garuda’s head: beak forward, eyes wide, hair breaking into flame. High relief and deep undercutting leave shadow behind the face, allowing it to read clearly even at a distance.

Two lotus thrones. One tier rises beneath the garuda and another closes above him, both edged with fine beaded borders. Nothing sacred is set down directly. The centre of the vajra is therefore not merely an ornament, but a seat with something seated upon it.

Eight natural garnets. Four are hand-set at the root of the outer prongs at each end. Their deep red is the only colour against the darkened silver, placed exactly where the structure already draws the eye.

Finished on every face. Flame scrolls, petals and granulation continue around the entire shaft. There is no unfinished back; however the pendant turns, a completed surface faces forward.

A chain made for the piece. The pendant is supplied on a titanium bead chain, passing through a carved bail and closing with a worked hook clasp. Even the clasp is carved.

Weight that behaves. At 33 grams, it is substantial enough to hang straight against the chest. At 60 millimetres, it remains short enough to wear beneath a collar.

The Meaning

Vajra carries two meanings at once: thunderbolt and diamond. One cuts through anything; the other cannot be cut by anything. Together they describe a mind that meets what comes without shattering, and without first having to become hard.

The five prongs at each end represent the five wisdoms of the five buddha families: the mirror that shows things as they are; the equality that stops ranking them; the discernment that still tells them apart; the wisdom that completes what it begins; and the open space in which the other four move. Four curve inward toward the fifth as the four directions gather around a centre.

The garuda is the one who consumes poison and is not harmed by it. In Himalayan traditions, he is invoked against harms that work from within: old resentment, fixation and the slow poisons a person carries without noticing.

The lotus completes the image. It rises from mud without carrying the mud with it.

What cannot be broken. Guarded by what cannot be poisoned. Standing upon what came clean out of the mud.

May nothing break you. May nothing you have swallowed be allowed to remain. May you come up clean from wherever you have been.

How every piece is made

The gold on every piece goes through four stages, each one done by hand.

Swipe to follow each stage

Laying 24K gold leaf onto a hand-carved sterling silver bangle with tweezers
01

Gold leaf, laid by hand

The gold is 24K leaf, thick enough to pick up with tweezers. It is laid onto the silver in small pieces, one section of the carving at a time, and pressed down with a burnisher.

02

Cut under a 40× microscope

Every line is cut with a hand graver. The finest parts, an eye, a whisker, the edge where gold meets silver, are worked under a 40× microscope, where a slip of a tenth of a millimetre would show.

03

Gold only where it belongs

The leaf is worked along each scroll until it follows the carving exactly. Gold goes only where the design asks for it. The rest of the silver is left bare, to be darkened later so the carving reads.

04

Fused by fire at 900°C

Then the torch. At around 900°C, below gold's melting point of 1063°C, the leaf bonds into the silver and becomes part of it. The heat is judged by eye, one area at a time: too cool and the gold lifts later, too hot and the carving underneath is lost.

Afterwards every gilded edge is cut again under the microscope. This is fire-gilding, not ordinary gold plating.

Frequently asked questions

How long does delivery take?

Every piece is held in stock and ships within 1–3 business days (engraved pieces need about 3 more). Delivery with YunExpress then takes 5–8 business days, so most orders arrive within about two weeks. We email your tracking number as soon as the package leaves us.

Will I have to pay import duties or taxes?

No. We pay import duties, taxes and customs fees for every country we ship to. The total at checkout is the total you pay. If a carrier ever asks you for duty, don't pay it; email us and we will settle it.

What is fire-gilding, and how is it different from gold plating?

Gold foil is fused into the sterling silver by heat at around 900°C, then every edge is re-cut by hand under a 40× microscope. The gold becomes part of the piece, a real weight of 24K gold rather than the thin film of ordinary gold plating, so it does not lift, flake or wear thin. More on fire-gilding

Why is the silver dark in places?

The dark recesses are oxidation, added on purpose so the carving reads clearly. It is not tarnish. A soft dry cloth on the raised surfaces is all the cleaning it needs; please don't use silver dip or polishing compound, which would strip the shading.

Can I return or exchange a piece?

Yes. Email us within 30 days of delivery and you can return a piece in the condition you received it for a full refund, with no restocking fee. Rings can be exchanged for another size within 30 days. Engraved pieces, consecrated pieces and the Nine-Palace Zodiac Amulet are final sale unless they arrive faulty, damaged or not what you ordered. Refund policy

How do I find my ring size?

Measure the finger you will wear it on, at the end of the day, and make sure the size clears your knuckle. Our ring size guide has a US size chart and two easy ways to measure at home.

Can I wear it in water?

It depends on the piece. Pieces set with natural stones should come off before swimming or bathing and be wiped dry after contact with water. Each product page lists its stones and its own care notes.

How can I pay?

Checkout is through PayPal, where you can pay with your PayPal balance or with a credit or debit card. Prices are in US dollars.
