Spirits of Life

Our bench grew up inside Buddhist work: stupas, vajras, conch shells, the whole Himalayan vocabulary. But a pair of silversmith's hands should not belong to one tradition alone.

So we went north. Past the edge of what we already knew how to make, into the deep forest, looking for the lives that were there long before anyone arrived to name them — not animals to decorate a ring with, but lives old enough to be owed something. Awe is the honest word for it.

Spirits of Life is what came back. Every piece in it takes months to carry from first sketch to finished silver, because there is no pattern book for something you had to go that far to find.

And when we got far enough in, we found that people had been there too — and that the first house they ever built was this shape. A ring of poles leaning into each other. A skin stretched over them. A hole left open at the top so the smoke could leave and the stars could get in.

Then we hung a bell inside it. Lift this pendant and it answers — a small, clear, carrying note, the sound a thing makes when it wants you to know it is there.

1. A house small enough to carry. The whole piece is one shelter, built as a shelter is built: the cone raised first, the poles crossing at the smoke hole, the door set into one side. It is not a charm shaped like a tent. It is a tent, at 45 mm, with a floor you can see up into and a roof you could pass a thread of smoke through.

2. It actually rings. A bell hangs inside the lodge, and the silver cone is its body. The note is bright and clear and travels further than a piece this size has any right to — and because the bell is inside the house, the house is the instrument. This is the part that makes people keep picking it up.

3. The poles, carved one at a time. At the crown the lodge poles cross and splay open, each one cut separately, with real air between them. They are what the cord threads through, so the piece hangs from its own architecture rather than from a soldered-on loop.

4. Two gold bands, where the lashings go. Two lines of 24K fire-gilding wrap the cone exactly where a real lodge is bound — and the upper band thickens into a short gilded whipping at the front, the way cord doubles back on itself when it is tied off. Gold used as structure, not as sparkle.

5. The door. A gilded arch with a fine beaded edge frames a dark open doorway, with a single gold rivet set above it. It is the only opening in the front of the piece, and your eye goes there every time — which is correct. A door is supposed to be the thing you look at.

6. The animals on the walls. Carved into the panels: a bird with its wings spread wide, and a bison standing heavy and low. They are cut flat and simple, the way marks get made when someone is drawing on hide with something hard — the lives outside the lodge, put on the inside of the wall by whoever was sheltering from them.

7. Chevrons round the hem. A band of carved zigzag runs all the way round the lower edge, deep-cut and oxidised. It gives the cone a base, and it is the first thing that catches light when the piece swings.

8. Hides, not sheet metal. The panels are finished at alternating brightness — some darkened, some left bright — so the cone reads as separate skins stitched together rather than one smooth surface. Up close you can see where each panel ends.

9. Two ways to live with it. On the leather cord it is a pendant. Off it, it is an object: hang it from a bag, a rear-view mirror, a door handle, the end of a pack. Very little jewellery survives being taken off. This does.

About this design

The conical pole-and-hide lodge is one of the oldest shelters human beings ever built, and versions of it stand across the whole northern world. This piece is our own design, drawn and carved by our own silversmiths and made in China. It is not a Native American product, it is not a copy of any people's sacred object, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any tribe or tribal organization.

The Meaning

In an old forest, sound is how you know you are not alone. Everything alive announces itself eventually — and everything that stays silent is either very far away or very close.

So a bell is not a decoration. It is the oldest way of saying something here is awake. You hang it at the entrance of a place you want protected, and from then on nothing crosses that line without the line answering.

That is why this one lives inside a house. The shelter and the sound are the same idea, said twice: a small, warm, lit space with a boundary around it, and a clear note that tells you the boundary is holding.

May you always have somewhere to come back to, and may it answer when you reach it.

Materials & craft

S925 sterling silver, carved by hand. Gold accents are traditional 24K fire-gilding, bonded into the silver at around 900 °C, not plated. Stones are natural and called by their real names.

How every piece is made

The gold on every piece goes through four stages, each one done by hand.

Swipe to follow each stage

Laying 24K gold leaf onto a hand-carved sterling silver bangle with tweezers
01

Gold leaf, laid by hand

The gold is 24K leaf, thick enough to pick up with tweezers. It is laid onto the silver in small pieces, one section of the carving at a time, and pressed down with a burnisher.

02

Cut under a 40× microscope

Every line is cut with a hand graver. The finest parts, an eye, a whisker, the edge where gold meets silver, are worked under a 40× microscope, where a slip of a tenth of a millimetre would show.

03

Gold only where it belongs

The leaf is worked along each scroll until it follows the carving exactly. Gold goes only where the design asks for it. The rest of the silver is left bare, to be darkened later so the carving reads.

04

Fused by fire at 900°C

Then the torch. At around 900°C, below gold's melting point of 1063°C, the leaf bonds into the silver and becomes part of it. The heat is judged by eye, one area at a time: too cool and the gold lifts later, too hot and the carving underneath is lost.

Afterwards every gilded edge is cut again under the microscope. This is fire-gilding, not ordinary gold plating.

Frequently asked questions

How long does delivery take?

Every piece is held in stock and ships within 1–3 business days (engraved pieces need about 3 more). Delivery with YunExpress then takes 5–8 business days, so most orders arrive within about two weeks. We email your tracking number as soon as the package leaves us.

Will I have to pay import duties or taxes?

No. We pay import duties, taxes and customs fees for every country we ship to. The total at checkout is the total you pay. If a carrier ever asks you for duty, don't pay it; email us and we will settle it.

What is fire-gilding, and how is it different from gold plating?

Gold foil is fused into the sterling silver by heat at around 900°C, then every edge is re-cut by hand under a 40× microscope. The gold becomes part of the piece, a real weight of 24K gold rather than the thin film of ordinary gold plating, so it does not lift, flake or wear thin. More on fire-gilding

Why is the silver dark in places?

The dark recesses are oxidation, added on purpose so the carving reads clearly. It is not tarnish. A soft dry cloth on the raised surfaces is all the cleaning it needs; please don't use silver dip or polishing compound, which would strip the shading.

Can I return or exchange a piece?

Yes. Email us within 30 days of delivery and you can return a piece in the condition you received it for a full refund, with no restocking fee. Rings can be exchanged for another size within 30 days. Engraved pieces, consecrated pieces and the Nine-Palace Zodiac Amulet are final sale unless they arrive faulty, damaged or not what you ordered. Refund policy

How do I find my ring size?

Measure the finger you will wear it on, at the end of the day, and make sure the size clears your knuckle. Our ring size guide has a US size chart and two easy ways to measure at home.

Can I wear it in water?

It depends on the piece. Pieces set with natural stones should come off before swimming or bathing and be wiped dry after contact with water. Each product page lists its stones and its own care notes.

How can I pay?

Checkout is through PayPal, where you can pay with your PayPal balance or with a credit or debit card. Prices are in US dollars.
