yellow-jambhala-black-gold-thangka
Yellow Jambhala Black & Gold Thangka – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Yellow Jambhala

Yellow Jambhala (Tibetan: Dzambhala Serpo) is the best known of the Jambhala deities of Tibetan Buddhism, associated with abundance and generosity. He is shown in his classic form: golden yellow, stout and crowned, his left leg folded and right leg extended. His right hand holds out a citron; his left holds a mongoose. This is a standard black and gold thangka, with Jambhala alone at the centre.

The design

1. Black and gold. This is a black and gold thangka: the ground is black, and the halo, clouds, flowers and robes are all worked in fine gold and silver line. Only the deity's body is in full colour. In Tibet black and gold together carry a sense of dignity and mystery, and here the yellow of his body almost glows against it.

2. The face. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. His is broad and strong: round eyes, a curled moustache, a small beard, a crown rising to a jewel at the top of the head. It is the face of a guardian, not of a monk.

3. Mongoose and citron. In his left hand he holds a mongoose, which in the tradition spits jewels. In his right he holds out a citron fruit. These two attributes identify him in every Yellow Jambhala painting.

4. Jewels and crystals. He wears necklaces of jewels, and here they really catch the light: red, green and clear glass crystals set along each strand, with larger red and blue crystals around the gold mandorla. Every one is placed by hand.

5. Clouds and hand finishing. He sits above clouds and mountains drawn in gold and copper, and the piece shown is framed in Ink & Gold brocade, black and silver. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

In Tibetan tradition Jambhala is associated with abundance, and his practice is traditionally taught as a practice of generosity: removing poverty so that one is able to give. His image does not make anyone rich, and no thangka can. What it holds is an old idea that has nothing to do with greed: that having enough is good because it lets you be generous. For practitioners it is a support for that practice; in the home it is a strong, warm image in black and gold.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Ink & Gold · Night Sky · Crimson Cloud · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May you always have enough, and enough to give.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
