Nothing alive is born with six.

That is the whole point, and it has been the point for three thousand years — carved on temple gates across the Deccan, painted on monastery walls in the Himalaya, walking in gold armour ahead of the kings of Siam and Angkor. Two tusks is an animal. Six is a god, and he was never anything else. He did not become divine. He arrived that way.

He sits at the terminal of an open cuff, and he is not a motif. The ears are cut free of the ground and curl at their outer edges. The trunk comes down in a heavy spiral and tucks beneath itself. The skull has weight in it — under the oxidised black you can still read the muscle across the brow.

A gold trident rises between the eyes. A line of gold beads runs the length of the trunk. In the crown above, one cabochon of Nanhong agate: opaque, blood-dark, the red old carvers reached for when they wanted a thing to look alive.

OPEN CUFF · SELECT YOUR SIZE
Available for wrists from 16 cm to 22 cm — choose your size above before adding to cart.
Each cuff is hand-set to that size, and the open back allows a small final adjustment.

How to measure: wrap a strip of paper around your wrist where the cuff will sit, mark where it meets, and measure that length in centimetres. Nothing in nature has six.

Two tusks would have been easier and no one would have counted. We carved six — fire-gilded, curving forward in pairs at three depths, each pair cut free of the one beneath it without the trunk losing its line.

Six is the number that takes him out of the animal world. It is an image of the complete and the fearless: a thing that has nothing left to develop and nothing left to be afraid of.

2. An animal first. A god second.

Deities carved as symbols come out flat. We carved the beast.

The brow is heavy. The trunk has slack in it where it curls, the way real weight hangs. The ears are thin at the rim and thick at the root. Look at him from the side and there is a skull under that silver, not a relief.

The eyes are gilded, so they find the light before the rest of the face does. That is the only trick on the whole head, and it is the reason he looks back at you.

3. Gold placed where a god is crowned

The six tusks. The trident between the eyes. The beaded line down the trunk. The granulation across the crown — gold spheres set one at a time under a 40× microscope.

Those spheres are the smallest work on the bangle. By the law of this craft, they took the longest.

4. Eight auspicious symbols, along the back

Where the cuff lies against the underside of the wrist, eight gold symbols run in sequence through silver scrollwork: the parasol, the golden fish, the treasure vase, the lotus, the conch, the endless knot, the victory banner and the dharma wheel. Graver strokes stay where they fell.

A sacred object that looks new looks like a souvenir. Fifty-one grams: heavy enough that you know all day it is there, light enough that you never take it off.

The Meaning

The elephant is the oldest sacred animal in Asia, and the one that never had to be made frightening to be respected. He does not hurry. He does not posture. He remembers everything, and he moves anyway.

Six tusks make him something else again — not a strong animal, but the finished form of strength: valour without violence, power that has stopped needing to prove itself.

May your strength never need proving.

May you move slowly and arrive first.

May what you carry never bend you.

Why we keep returning to this form

The elephant and the garuda are the two subjects we have spent the most years on. They are the hardest things we make — six tusks that must clear one another, feathers that must be freed row by row, gold that must be fused a millimetre at a time under glass.

We are not interested in making the most of them.
