medicine-buddha-thangka-black-gold
Medicine Buddha Black & Gold Thangka – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Medicine Buddha

The Medicine Buddha (Sanskrit: Bhaisajyaguru; Tibetan: Sangye Menla) is the Buddha of healing in the Mahayana tradition. He is shown in his classic form: deep blue in colour, the blue of lapis lazuli, seated in the vajra posture. His right hand rests over his knee in the gesture of giving; his left lies in his lap and holds a bowl. This is a black and gold thangka, with Shakyamuni, Amitabha and Ratnasambhava above him and two female protectors below.

The design

1. Lapis blue. His body is a clear, saturated blue, the one strong colour in the painting. Against the black ground it is the first thing you see from across a room. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say: lowered eyes, a red mark between the brows, dark blue hair rising to the crown of the head. The figure is drawn to the traditional iconometric grid.

2. Hands and bowl. The right hand, palm outward over the knee, is the gesture of giving. The left rests in the lap and holds a dark bowl worked in gold line. Every detail of the hands and robe is drawn in fine gold over black.

3. Above and below. Three buddhas sit across the top of the painting, each in a halo ringed with red and blue crystals: Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha; Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light; and Ratnasambhava, the Buddha of the southern direction, linked with generosity and equanimity. Below the lotus throne sit two female protectors, one white and one blue, with a wish-fulfilling jewel offering between them.

4. Black and gold. The ground is black, filled with clouds and foliage drawn in gold and copper line, with full colour kept for the figures. In Tibet black and gold together carry a sense of dignity and mystery. The piece shown is framed in Ink & Gold brocade, black and silver, which continues the painting into the silk.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing. At a temple, elderly lay Buddhists set every red and blue crystal along the halo and mandorla by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

In the Medicine Buddha sutra he makes twelve vows as a bodhisattva, among them that those who hear his name will be freed from illness and suffering. In Tibet he is closely tied to the medical tradition, and Tibetan doctors have long kept his image and recited his mantra. He stands for healing in the widest sense: of the body, and of the greed, anger and confusion that Buddhism sees as the deeper illness. A thangka is not medicine. For practitioners it is a support for practice and prayer; in the home it is a quiet image of care, for yourself and for the people you look after.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Ink & Gold · Night Sky · Crimson Cloud · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May you and those you care for be well.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
