marici-thangka-seven-boars
Marici Thangka, Goddess of Dawn on a Chariot of Seven Boars – Framed Wall Art

Marici

Marici (Tibetan: Özer Chenma, "she who has rays of light") is the Buddhist goddess of the light of dawn. She is shown in her classic form: golden, with three faces, one of them the face of a sow, and eight arms, seated on a chariot drawn by seven blue boars. Her hands hold a bow and arrow among other implements.

The design

1. Three faces. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. Her central face is golden and calm, with a third eye; to one side is a white face, to the other the dark face of a sow, which links her to the boars that pull her chariot.

2. Eight arms. Her eight arms hold out bow and arrow and other implements, framed against a great golden wheel set with red, blue and clear crystals placed one by one by hand.

3. Seven boars. Below, seven blue boars in red harness pull her chariot over the ground, all moving together, each tusk and snout drawn separately. It is one of the most recognisable scenes in Tibetan painting.

4. Dawn. A rainbow rises at the top of the painting, the sun and moon sit in a night-blue sky, and trees and clouds open on either side. The piece shown is framed in Night Sky brocade.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

Marici is the light that comes before the sun: it cannot be caught or harmed. In Tibetan and East Asian Buddhism she has long been invoked by travellers and by anyone setting out on a journey. For practitioners she is a goddess of protection on the road. In the home she is a bright, moving image of morning, of starting out.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple.
