manjushri-thangka-flaming-sword-framed
Manjushri Thangka with Flaming Sword – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Manjushri

Manjushri (Tibetan: Jampelyang) is the bodhisattva of wisdom. He is shown in his classic form: golden in colour, youthful, crowned, seated in the vajra posture. His right hand raises the flaming sword of wisdom; his left, at his heart, holds the stem of a lotus that opens at his shoulder and carries a book, the Perfection of Wisdom sutra. This thangka sets him on a night-blue ground under clouds and peonies.

The design

1. Sword and book. The two attributes say who he is. The sword is wisdom that cuts through confusion, its blade ending in a flame. The book on the lotus is the Prajnaparamita, the teaching on the perfection of wisdom. Every image of Manjushri carries some form of these two.

2. The face. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. His is young and gentle, eyes half lowered, a slight smile. Manjushri is often described as a youth, and the painting keeps that softness. He wears a five-pointed crown set with crystals, and the figure is drawn to the traditional iconometric grid.

3. Night blue and gold. The ground is deep blue, scattered with stars, with white clouds above and red, yellow and white peonies around the halo. Blue in Tibet is associated with stillness and a clear mind. The piece shown is framed in Night Sky brocade, which carries the blue out to the frame.

4. Halo and mandorla. A light blue halo circles his head. Behind him a gold mandorla is set with red and blue glass crystals, each placed by hand, and his crown, necklace and armlets catch the light the same way.

5. Lotus, mountains, hand finishing. He sits on a double lotus of red and blue petals above green mountains and water, with an offering of a jewel ringed in gold beads below. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

Manjushri represents the wisdom that sees things as they are. In Tibet he is traditionally invoked by students, scholars and writers, and his mantra is recited for clarity of mind and learning. For practitioners, his thangka is a support for study and practice. In a study or workroom it is an image of clear thinking: one hand lifting the sword, the other holding the book close.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Night Sky · Ink & Gold · Crimson Cloud · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May your mind be clear, and your words be kind.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
