The snow lion.\u003c\/strong\u003e He sits on a white snow lion with a curling mane of black and green, a red collar hung with gold bells, its mouth open. The lion stands on a white cushion above an ornate lotus base. It is the detail that names this form.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e2. Sword and book.\u003c\/strong\u003e The two attributes of Manjushri appear on lotuses at his shoulders: the sword of wisdom that cuts through confusion, and the book of the Perfection of Wisdom teaching.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e3. The face.\u003c\/strong\u003e The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. His is young and gentle, eyes lowered, a small smile, under a five-pointed crown. The figure is drawn to the traditional iconometric grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e4. Rainbow and peonies.\u003c\/strong\u003e A turquoise halo circles his head, inside a gold arch set with amber crystals, under a rainbow. Peonies in pink, red, white and orange fill the night-blue ground, and below the throne, offerings of jewels and a conch rest on lotuses above the waves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e5. Hand finishing.\u003c\/strong\u003e The piece shown is framed in Night Sky brocade. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe meaning\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eManjushri represents the wisdom that sees things as they are. In this form the snow lion carries the meaning: wisdom that is not timid, that can speak clearly and without fear. In Tibet Manjushri is traditionally invoked by students, scholars and writers. For practitioners this thangka is a support for study and practice; in a study or workroom it is a bright, colourful image of clear and fearless thinking.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eEvery thangka is also an offering\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there.
