kurukulla-red-thangka-framed
Kurukulla Red Thangka with Flower Bow – Framed Tibetan Wall Art

Kurukulla

Kurukulla is a red form of Tara in Tibetan Buddhism, associated with the activity of magnetising: drawing beings toward the good. She is shown in her classic form: red in colour, crowned with skulls, her hair flaming upward, drawing a bow made of flowers with an arrow tipped with a flower. She stands above a lotus and sun seat. This thangka is red on red, from the ground to the frame.

The design

1. The flower bow. Her bow and arrow are made of flowers. They are the attributes that name her: she does not wound, she draws in.

2. The face. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. Hers is young and intense, three-eyed, under a crown of small white skulls, her hair a blaze of gold. Ornaments of bone and jewels, set with crystals, cross her body.

3. Posture. She stands above a lotus and sun seat on a reclining figure, the whole body leaning into the drawn bow, as if the arrow is about to leave the string.

4. Red on red. Everything is red: the ground, the clouds, the flames, the deity. Fine gold and white lines separate one red from another. Below sit two smaller red figures in their own haloes, with offerings in white skull bowls between them. The piece shown is framed in Crimson Cloud brocade.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

In Tibetan Buddhism red is the colour of magnetising activity, and Kurukulla is its clearest image. Tradition holds that her flower arrows draw beings toward what is good for them, and her practice is often linked with the power to attract and inspire. For practitioners she is a deity of joyful, confident practice. In the home she is a striking image, the most purely red of all our thangkas.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Crimson Cloud · Night Sky · Ink & Gold · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May what is good for you be drawn near.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
