The throne back.\u003c\/strong\u003e Behind Tara rises a throne back built from the traditional figures, stacked from the top down: Garuda with outspread wings, flanked by two nāga maidens; makaras curling outward; riders; blue mythic beasts; and white elephants at the base. Red and green crystals are set along the arch around her, one by one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e3. Green Tara.\u003c\/strong\u003e Her face is young and calm under a jewelled crown and an orange halo, blue flowers open on long stems at both shoulders, and her right foot rests on a small lotus of its own: a figure seated, yet already moving.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e4. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe meaning\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eGreen Tara is traditionally the one people turn to when they are afraid, and her twenty-one praises are among the most often recited prayers in Tibet. Here she is placed inside a complete world: the Five Buddhas above, the protectors of the teaching below. Palden Lhamo and Mahakala are guardians of the Dharma; Vaishravana is guardian of the north and, in Tibetan tradition, of abundance. For practitioners the painting gathers a whole practice into one image.
