This one asks for almost none. A slim band, a bird's head no larger than a grain of rice, and a single line of gold running the whole way round — small enough for the little finger, and finished as though it were going somewhere much more visible.

That is the point of it. The pieces people notice are easy. The piece that has to survive being looked at from twenty centimetres away, on the smallest finger you have, is the harder brief.

OPEN BAND · US SIZES 7 – 13
6.8 – 10 g / 0.24 – 0.35 oz depending on size · slim band · natural garnet, hand-set
The band is open at the back and takes a small final adjustment by hand.

Wearing it as a pinky ring: a little finger usually takes about three to four US sizes smaller than the same hand's ring finger. If you normally wear a US 12 on your ring finger, try a US 8 here. Worn on the index or middle finger it reads as a full statement ring instead — both are right.

Design Philosophy

1. Built for the smallest finger. A tail ring has nowhere to hide. The band has to stay slim or the hand looks crowded, and everything that makes the piece worth wearing has to happen inside a few millimetres. We kept the band narrow and put all the weight of the work into the head.

2. The garuda's head, carved in the round. Beak, brow ridge, the set of the eyes — cut so the face holds an expression rather than a shape. At this scale most makers simplify. We did the opposite, and the head is the reason the ring works.

3. Gold on the parts that are barely there. The eyes, the ridge of the brows and the two curving horns are fire-gilded in 24K gold. These are the smallest surfaces on the piece, and gilding them is genuinely rare work — the gold has to bond and then stop dead at a line under a millimetre wide. A fraction too far and the face closes up. Done right, the gold is what makes the bird look back at you.

4. A garnet set into the brow. A natural garnet sits at the centre of the forehead, between the two gilded horns, set by hand into silver that was carved first. Against the darkened silver it reads almost black, then catches the light and goes deep red.

5. Feathers the whole way down. The band is not plain. Feathers are carved along its length, layered and slightly lifted, so the ring keeps moving even when the hand is still — the body of the bird continuing round the finger and finishing in a carved tail.

6. One line of gold, all the way round. A single fire-gilded line follows the band from head to tail. It costs an extra firing and gains nothing structurally. What it does is tie the head to the body, so the whole ring reads as one animal instead of a carved head on a plain hoop.

The Meaning

The garuda hatches already able to fly. It does not grow into its strength — it arrives with it. And it eats poison: in the Himalaya it is the one called on against venom, and against the slower poisons that work from the inside, the resentment and fixation a person carries without meaning to.

The little finger has its own old association. In China a ring worn there is said to keep away the “small people” — the petty, the two-faced, the quiet trouble people make for each other. In the West a pinky ring has always been the ring you wear for yourself rather than for anyone else.

Put those together and the piece explains itself. The bird that eats poison, worn on the finger that turns poison away.

May nothing that is meant to harm you reach you, and may you meet none of it afraid.

Part of the workshop's garuda work, alongside the Garuda Five-Pronged Vajra Pendant and the Garuda Crossed Vajra Pendant.

Material & Craftsmanship

S925 sterling silver, hand-carved

24K gold, fire-gilded on the eyes, brows, horns and the line along the band

Natural garnet, hand-set into the brow

Slim open band; US sizes 7 to 13

6.8 – 10 g / 0.24 – 0.35 oz depending on size

Worn as a pinky ring, or as a statement ring on a larger finger

Traditional Fire-Gilding

Gold foil is fused onto the surface of S925 sterling silver at approximately 900°C. Gold's own melting point is 1063°C, so the work happens inside a narrow window: hot enough for the gold to bond, not hot enough for it to run.

Every detail is then engraved and shaped by hand under a 40× microscope. The smaller the surface, the harder it gets — and on this ring the gilded surfaces are a pair of eyebrows and two horns.

This is not ordinary gold plating: the gold is fired into the silver rather than deposited on its surface, so it becomes part of the piece — a real weight of gold, not a film.

Because that gold is bonded into the silver rather than laid on top of it, it does not lift, flake or wear thin.

The garnet is set deep and takes ordinary wear without complaint. The band is open by design — adjust it gently with your fingers, not with pliers, and only a little at a time. Wipe the ring dry after it has been in water.
