Antlers standing clear of the skull, mane swept back strand by strand, gold running along the brow and down the whiskers — and behind it, copper flames climbing both shoulders of the ring as though the animal were coming through fire and had not slowed down.

There is no subtle way to wear a dragon. We did not try to find one. What we did instead was make sure that the closer you look, the more there is.

OPEN BAND · US SIZES 7 – 12
27 mm tall × 8 mm deep (1.1 × 0.3 in) · 28 g / 1.0 oz
S925 sterling silver · 24K gold, fire-gilded · refined red copper
The band is open at the back and takes a small final adjustment by hand.

How to size: choose the US size you normally wear on that finger. Because the band is open, a small correction by hand covers the rest — adjust gently with your fingers, not with pliers.

Design Philosophy

1. The head carved in the round. Not a dragon in relief on a flat face — a head with volume, cut so the brow overhangs the eye and the snout comes forward off the ring. It is the difference between a picture of an animal and an animal.

2. Antlers that stand free. The horns branch away from the skull with air behind them, each tine carved separately. They are the most fragile thing on the piece and the first thing most workshops would flatten into the surface. We left them standing.

3. Gold exactly where the face lives. The horns, the brow ridge, the eyes and the long whiskers are fire-gilded in 24K gold — the classical dian jing, the finishing stroke that gives the creature its gaze. Everything else stays silver, so the gold has nothing to compete with.

4. Whiskers in gold, off the surface. Two gilded whiskers curl away from the snout and float clear of the carving. At this scale they are almost wire, and they have to be gilded without losing their line.

5. Flames in refined red copper. Both shoulders carry flame scrollwork worked in refined red copper — a third metal, warm against the darkened silver, so the dragon reads as soaring through fire-cloud rather than sitting on a band. This is real copper set into the piece, and its colour stays as it is.

6. Auspicious clouds along the sides. The band does not go plain once it leaves the head. Silver cloud scrollwork is carved down both sides, deep-cut and oxidised so the shadow holds — the sky the dragon is moving through, continued all the way round the finger.

7. The seal, answering the dragon. A small fire-gilded plaque sits flush in the polished panel of the band, set the way an imperial seal is pressed into a scroll. In China the seal and the dragon say the same thing from two directions: the dragon is authority in its living form, the seal is authority set down and made binding — nothing was decreed until the seal came down on it. So the two belong on one ring. The dragon holds the face of it; the seal, quietly, countersigns. It is the smallest detail on the piece and the one collectors find last.

8. Finished inside as well as out. The inner band is polished smooth and left entirely plain — no carving to catch, no edges to wear on the finger. A ring this heavy has to be comfortable or it never leaves the drawer.

The Meaning

No creature stands higher in Asia. The dragon is the emblem of supreme authority and of the sacred itself — the totem placed above every other, carried on the robes of emperors and cut into the walls of temples.

But it was never only the ruler's animal. In folk belief the dragon is an auspicious divine beast, the one who governs the sky and commands the rivers and the seas — who brings the rain when the fields are dry, and sends fortune down into the ordinary world. Power at its highest, turned toward blessing rather than away from it.

That is the dragon we carved. Not a threat on the hand. A presence on it.

May authority find you, and may it arrive in your hands as generosity.

Material & Craftsmanship

S925 sterling silver, hand-carved

24K gold, fire-gilded on the horns, brow, eyes and whiskers

Refined red copper flame scrollwork on both shoulders

Fire-gilded seal plaque set flush into the band

27 mm tall × 8 mm deep / 1.1 × 0.3 in

28 g / 1.0 oz

Open band; US sizes 7 to 12

Polished plain inner band

Three Metals on One Ring

Sterling silver, 24K gold and refined red copper, each doing one job: silver for the body and the clouds, gold for the face, copper for the fire. Three metals on a surface this small means three separate stages of work, and each one has to land inside the boundaries of the last.

Traditional Fire-Gilding

Gold foil is fused onto the surface of S925 sterling silver at approximately 900°C. Gold's own melting point is 1063°C, so the work happens inside a narrow window: hot enough for the gold to bond, not hot enough for it to run.

Every detail is then engraved and shaped by hand under a 40× microscope. The smaller the surface, the harder it gets — and on this ring the gilded surfaces include a pair of whiskers.

This is not ordinary gold plating: the gold is fired into the silver rather than deposited on its surface, so it becomes part of the piece — a real weight of gold, not a film.

Because that gold is bonded into the silver rather than laid on top of it, it does not lift, flake or wear thin. Shower in it, swim in it, take it into a hot spring. Electroplating survives none of that for long.

Avoid hard knocks against stone or tile, particularly on the antlers, and wipe the ring dry after it has been in water.
