cundi-thangka-framed
Cundi Thangka, Eighteen-Armed Mother of Buddhas – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Cundi

Cundi (Sanskrit Cundī or Cundā; Chinese Zhunti, "Buddha-Mother Zhunti"; Tibetan lha mo skul byed ma) is a female deity of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, known above all through her dharani. She is shown here white, crowned, with a third eye, seated in the vajra posture on a great lotus, with eighteen arms spread around her like a wheel. Her two central hands are joined at her heart; the others hold out a sword, a victory banner, a lotus, a vase, a wheel, a rosary and an axe, among other implements.

The design

1. Eighteen arms. Her arms open in a full circle behind her, each hand holding something different. Seen from across a room, they read as one shape: a white wheel of hands inside a blue disc.

2. The face. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say. Hers is calm and young, with a third eye, under a crown set with green and red crystals.

3. The halo. A great round halo, gold and orange, ringed with a row of gold beads, encloses her whole figure. Inside it the ground is deep blue patterned in silver.

4. Lotus, peonies, water. She sits on a white and pink lotus above water and blue rocks, with peonies and fruit on all sides, a flaming jewel at the top and offerings below. The piece shown is framed in Night Sky brocade.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

Cundi is known first through a short dharani, oṃ cale cule cunde svāhā, and through her title, Mother of Seven Koṭis of Buddhas. Her texts were translated into Chinese in the Tang dynasty, and in China and Japan she became one of the best-loved figures of esoteric practice; in Japan she is Juntei Kannon. In Tibetan collections she is a quieter presence, a white and peaceful dharani goddess. For practitioners she is a support for recitation. In the home she is a calm, bright image: white, eighteen-handed, at the centre of a golden circle.
