amitabha-thangka-tsongkhapa-medicine-buddha-jambhala
Amitabha Buddha Thangka with Shakyamuni, Tsongkhapa, Medicine Buddha & Yellow Jambhala – Framed Tibetan Wall Art

Amitabha Buddha

Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light (Tibetan: Öpame), presides over Sukhavati, the Pure Land of the West, and heads the Lotus family. He is shown in his classic form: red in colour, seated in the vajra posture, hands in the meditation mudra holding an alms bowl. This thangka follows a traditional composition for large-format Amitabha paintings, with the main deity surrounded by attendant deities.

The design

1. Main deity. Amitabha sits at the centre on a lotus throne, framed by a round halo and a mandorla. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say, and the figure is drawn to the traditional iconometric grid: face, hands and the span of the knees kept to the proportions set down in the painting manuals.

2. Three figures above. Across the top, each in a halo among clouds, sit three figures. On the left is Shakyamuni Buddha, golden, his right hand reaching down to touch the earth and his left holding the alms bowl. In the centre, drawn in fine silver line, is Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the teacher from whom the Gelug tradition descends. On the right is the Medicine Buddha, lapis blue, Lord of the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli.

3. Nāginīs and Yellow Jambhala below. In the lower register two Nāginīs stand to either side, and Yellow Jambhala, the deity of wealth, sits at the centre beneath Amitabha's throne.

4. Colour. The ground is black, worked in fine gold and silver line, with full colour reserved for the deities. Black and gold, in Tibet, carry a sense of dignity and mystery. Amitabha's red is the colour of the Lotus family, associated with attraction and drawing good things near.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing. At a temple, elderly lay Buddhists set red and blue glass crystals along the mandorla by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece. The piece shown is framed in Ink & Gold silk brocade.

The meaning

Amitabha represents boundless light and the aspiration for rebirth in his Pure Land. Above him, Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha who first taught the path, Tsongkhapa a teacher who carried that teaching forward, and the Medicine Buddha the buddha of healing in Tibetan devotion. Yellow Jambhala, below, represents abundance. Brought together in one painting, they gather the teaching, a teacher of it and a traditional set of wishes: for health, for a household that has enough, and for a peaceful mind at the end of life. For practitioners it is a support for daily practice; in the home it is a classical image of light, teaching and sufficiency.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Ink & Gold · Night Sky · Crimson Cloud · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May boundless light be with you and your home.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
