amitabha-buddha-black-gold-thangka
Amitabha Buddha Black & Gold Thangka – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Amitabha Buddha

Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light (Tibetan: Öpame), presides over Sukhavati, the Pure Land of the West, and heads the Lotus family. He is shown in his classic form: seated in the vajra posture, hands in the meditation mudra holding an alms bowl, wearing the patched robe of a monastic. This is a standard black and gold thangka, with the deity alone at the centre.

The design

1. Black and gold. The painting is in the black and gold style: a black ground with the setting worked in gold. In Tibet black and gold together carry a sense of dignity and mystery, and the style lets the deity's colour and the crystals stand out clearly.

2. Face and proportions. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say: lowered eyes, long calm brows, the mouth at rest. Face, hands and the span of the knees are drawn to the traditional iconometric grid.

3. Halo and mandorla. The halo is ringed with blue glass crystals, set edge to edge. Blue stands for stillness and clarity of mind. The gold mandorla behind the body is set with red, yellow and blue crystals at even intervals.

4. Robe and bowl. The red robe is shown as a patched monastic robe, over a turquoise undergarment. Red is the colour of the Lotus family, associated with attraction and drawing good things near. Both hands rest in the meditation mudra and hold a blue and white alms bowl.

5. Seat, setting and hand finishing. He sits on a white cloud seat above a landscape, with gold peonies and foliage on a dark lattice behind. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

Amitabha represents boundless light and the aspiration for rebirth in his Pure Land. Through his vows, made as the monk Dharmakara, he is traditionally the Buddha to whom one turns for a peaceful mind and a peaceful end of life. Kept at home, his image expresses a wish for calm, for the wellbeing of the household and for long life. For practitioners it is a support for daily recitation and meditation.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple. So what you bring home is not only a thangka: you have also made an offering.

Size & details

Frame

55 × 71 × 12 cm (21.7 × 28 × 4.7 in), 4 kg

Image

40.2 × 56.2 cm (15.8 × 22.1 in)

Print

Heavy card, from our own drawing, to traditional proportions

Hand work

Glass crystals and gold glitter outlines, set by elderly lay Buddhists at a temple

Framing

Silk brocade frame-within-a-frame, wood frame, acrylic front

Brocade

Ink & Gold · Night Sky · Crimson Cloud · Warm Sun

Hanging

Ready to hang

Dispatch

Finished to order, ships in 3–5 business days

Delivery

10–14 business days by air, tracked, free, duties paid

May the boundless light of Amitabha be with you.

Temple consecration (optional, +US$100): choose "Temple consecration" above.
