akashagarbha-thangka-framed
Akashagarbha Bodhisattva Thangka – Framed Tibetan Wall Art with Hand-Set Crystals

Akashagarbha

Akashagarbha (Tibetan: Namkhai Nyingpo, "womb of space") is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, associated with wisdom as vast as space. He is shown here blue, crowned, his hair in a high topknot, seated in the vajra posture, holding an upright sword in his right hand. This thangka sets him under a rainbow, surrounded by peonies.

The design

1. Blue as the sky. His body is a clear sky blue. The face is opened last, as thangka painters say: eyes lowered, calm, under a five-pointed crown set with crystals.

2. The sword. In his right hand he holds a sword upright beside his shoulder, its blade dark blue, a symbol of the wisdom that cuts through confusion.

3. Rainbow and mandorla. A rainbow arches over a gold mandorla set with amber and red crystals, and a dark green halo circles his head. A flaming jewel rises from a lotus at the very top.

4. Garden and water. Peonies, fruit trees and clouds fill the night-blue ground, with a jewel offering on a lotus above the water below. The piece shown is framed in Night Sky brocade.

5. Hand finishing. The image is printed on heavy card from our own drawing; elderly lay Buddhists at a temple set every crystal by hand and trace the outlines in gold glitter, about two days for each piece.

The meaning

Akashagarbha's name means "womb of space" or "treasury of space": his wisdom and generosity are said to be as boundless as the sky. He is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas who surround the Buddha. For practitioners his image is a support for practices of purification and wisdom. In the home it is a calm, open image, a figure the colour of the sky.

Every thangka is also an offering

Each one is finished at a temple, by elderly lay Buddhists who practise there. Part of every order goes back to that temple.
