Auspicious clouds along the sides. The band does not go plain once it leaves the head. The seal, answering the dragon. A small fire-gilded plaque sits flush in the polished panel of the band, set the way an imperial seal is pressed into a scroll. In China the seal and the dragon say the same thing from two directions: the dragon is authority in its living form, the seal is authority set down and made binding — nothing was decreed until the seal came down on it. So the two belong on one ring. The dragon holds the face of it; the seal, quietly, countersigns. Antlers made of knotwork, not of bone. This is the decision the whole ring rests on. Instead of carving antlers, we let them grow as gold — an openwork Norse knot sweeping back across the crown of the ring, branching and looping and closing on itself the way a real rack branches. Pierced right through, gilded in 24K gold, and left standing proud of the silver. From the front the stag wears a crown. From above it is pure interlace. Nothing about it is literal, and that is exactly why it reads as a spirit rather than an animal.

2. Gold in the eyes. Two points of 24K gold, and the face comes alive. The beard, one strand at a time. Under the throat the ruff falls in long carved strands, each cut separately, layered and lifted so the fur has direction and weight. This is done under a 40× microscope — at normal magnification the strands simply cannot be separated. Runework along both sides. The shoulders carry old Norse interlace — beasts folding through their own bodies, carved deep and oxidised so the shadow stays in the line — with runic marks worked into the field and touched with gold. Gold under the animal. A gilded scroll cradles the deer's chest from below and runs out to the shoulders of the band, so the silver figure sits in a line of gold rather than ending against the metal. Gold inside the roar. The mouth is open and the whole of it — throat, tongue, the inside of the jaw — is fire-gilded in 24K gold. It is the only large gold surface on the ring, and it sits in the one place you would never expect to find gold: inside an animal's mouth. From across a table it reads as a flash of heat. Up close it is the roar itself, lit from within. This is the piece's finishing stroke, and everything else on the ring was designed around leaving it alone.

2. Eyes that answer the mouth. Two small points of gold in the eyes, deep under the brow. They keep the face from becoming pure noise — the bear is not blind with rage, it is looking at something. That is a far more frightening thing.

3. Fur, carved outward from the muzzle. Every strand of the ruff is cut separately and set flowing away from the snout, so the fur has direction — swept back as though by the force of the sound coming out of it. Layered, undercut and lifted, then oxidised so the shadow stays down between the hairs. It is the slowest work on the piece and the reason the head looks like an animal rather than a casting.

4. Beaded borders, top and bottom. Two rows of fine raised granulation frame the face of the ring, the way a Viking-age mount is bordered before anything is set into it. They do one job: they turn the bear from a carving on a band into a portrait in a frame.

5. Norse beasts along both shoulders. The sides carry old Northern interlace — long-necked creatures folding back through their own bodies, drawn in fine parallel line-work with dotted fills, exactly the vocabulary of carved Scandinavian stone and wood. Cut deep, darkened, then polished back on the ridges so the pattern reads at arm's length and keeps giving up detail as you get closer.

6. Four garnets, two to each side. Natural stones, set by hand into the interlace after the carving is finished — the harder order of work, and the only one that lets the setting follow the pattern instead of the pattern giving way to the setting. They run from deep red to almost black, and stay dark until the light finds them.

7. The band is not a band. Most animal rings put everything in the head and leave a plain hoop behind it. Here the interlace continues round both sides in framed panels, squared and bordered like the links of a carved belt, all the way to the open terminals at the back. There is no dead side to this ring.

8. Squared terminals, open by design. The band stops in two clean squared ends rather than tapering away. It leaves the ring adjustable, and it leaves the last panel of interlace complete instead of running it off the edge.

9. Wearable weight. 21 g and 3 mm through the band — substantial in the hand but not a knuckleduster. It sits close to the finger, and the head stands only 20 mm, so it wears every day rather than once a year.

The Meaning

In the north the bear was the one animal that did not have to prove anything. It was strength without ceremony — the reason a man who fought without armour was said to wear a bear's shirt, and the reason the bear turns up on shield, on post and on brooch wherever the old carvers worked.

And it is the animal of return. It goes into the dark for a whole season, lets the world give it up for dead, and walks back out when the light comes. Nothing in the forest is better at disappearing and nothing is better at coming back.

So the roar on this ring is not an attack.
