It is fire-gilded gold, stamped with a spiral knot, and it sits exactly where his right eye should be. Gold is the brightest thing on this pendant, and we put it over the wound. That was the decision the whole piece was built around.

His remaining eye is gilded too, warm against all that blackened silver. Gold placed on the wound, not on the crown

Odin traded an eye at Mímir's well for one drink of wisdom. Most designs hide that. We made it the focal point: a gold disc, engraved with a spiral knot, catching the light before anything else does.

The message is simple. The most valuable thing on this piece marks what he lost, not what he won.

2. A winged helmet with every feather cut separately

The wings sweep up and outward from the helmet, fire-gilded across their full span — the largest area of gold on the pendant. Each feather is a separate cut. Under the loupe you can count the rows.

The helmet crown itself stays silver, worked with Celtic knot bands and Norse ornamental carving across the side plates, so the gold reads as flight rather than decoration.

3. Two ravens, wings open, beaks gilded

Huginn and Muninn — Thought and Memory — sit low on either side, wings spread wide enough to frame the beard, heads turned outward rather than inward. In the poems they fly across all nine worlds at dawn and return at dusk to tell him what they saw.

Only the beaks are gilded. Two small points of gold, open, mid-cry.

4. The beard is the hardest thing on this pendant

The braids cross over and under one another, and every strand has to be cut free of the one beneath it — undercut by hand, from the side, where the graver has almost no room to work. A cast beard reads as one solid mass. This one reads as rope.

Each braid is then bound with a fire-gilded band. These are the smallest gilded surfaces on the whole piece, and in this craft the smallest surfaces are always the hardest: less room for the gold to hold, less room for the hand to correct.

5. Seven millimetres of depth, and the shadow it makes

At 7mm thick this is a high-relief carving, not a stamped disc. Every recess is oxidised black; every raised surface is brought back to bright silver by hand. That contrast is what lets the face read from across a room.

Turn it under a lamp and the shadows shift in the beard and the wing feathers. The garuda's head, carved in the round. Beak, brow ridge, the set of the eyes — cut so the face holds an expression rather than a shape. At this scale most makers simplify. Gold on the parts that are barely there. The eyes, the ridge of the brows and the two curving horns are fire-gilded in 24K gold. These are the smallest surfaces on the piece, and gilding them is genuinely rare work — the gold has to bond and then stop dead at a line under a millimetre wide. A fraction too far and the face closes up. Done right, the gold is what makes the bird look back at you.

4. A garnet set into the brow. A natural garnet sits at the centre of the forehead, between the two gilded horns, set by hand into silver that was carved first. Feathers the whole way down. The band is not plain. One line of gold, all the way round. A single fire-gilded line follows the band from head to tail. It costs an extra firing and gains nothing structurally. Pierced right through, gilded in 24K gold, and left standing proud of the silver. From the front the stag wears a crown. From above it is pure interlace. Runework along both sides. The shoulders carry old Norse interlace — beasts folding through their own bodies, carved deep and oxidised so the shadow stays in the line — with runic marks worked into the field and touched with gold. Gold under the animal. A gilded scroll cradles the deer's chest from below and runs out to the shoulders of the band, so the silver figure sits in a line of gold rather than ending against the metal. It walks between the world of people and the world that was here first, and in the old stories it is never hunted successfully — it appears, it is followed, and it leads the follower somewhere they would not have found alone.

It is also the animal of renewal. It was cast in the Eastern Han, close to two thousand years ago, and lifted out of a tomb in Gansu in 1969. Fur, carved outward from the muzzle. Every strand of the ruff is cut separately and set flowing away from the snout, so the fur has direction — swept back as though by the force of the sound coming out of it. Layered, undercut and lifted, then oxidised so the shadow stays down between the hairs. It is the slowest work on the piece and the reason the head looks like an animal rather than a casting.

4. Beaded borders, top and bottom. Two rows of fine raised granulation frame the face of the ring, the way a Viking-age mount is bordered before anything is set into it. They do one job: they turn the bear from a carving on a band into a portrait in a frame.

5. Norse beasts along both shoulders. The sides carry old Northern interlace — long-necked creatures folding back through their own bodies, drawn in fine parallel line-work with dotted fills, exactly the vocabulary of carved Scandinavian stone and wood. Cut deep, darkened, then polished back on the ridges so the pattern reads at arm's length and keeps giving up detail as you get closer.

6. Four garnets, two to each side. Natural stones, set by hand into the interlace after the carving is finished — the harder order of work, and the only one that lets the setting follow the pattern instead of the pattern giving way to the setting. They run from deep red to almost black, and stay dark until the light finds them.

7. The band is not a band. Most animal rings put everything in the head and leave a plain hoop behind it. Here the interlace continues round both sides in framed panels, squared and bordered like the links of a carved belt, all the way to the open terminals at the back. There is no dead side to this ring.

8. Squared terminals, open by design. The band stops in two clean squared ends rather than tapering away. It leaves the ring adjustable, and it leaves the last panel of interlace complete instead of running it off the edge.

9. Wearable weight. 21 g and 3 mm through the band — substantial in the hand but not a knuckleduster. It sits close to the finger, and the head stands only 20 mm, so it wears every day rather than once a year.

The Meaning

In the north the bear was the one animal that did not have to prove anything. It was strength without ceremony — the reason a man who fought without armour was said to wear a bear's shirt, and the reason the bear turns up on shield, on post and on brooch wherever the old carvers worked.

And it is the animal of return. It goes into the dark for a whole season, lets the world give it up for dead, and walks back out when the light comes. Nothing in the forest is better at disappearing and nothing is better at coming back.

So the roar on this ring is not an attack. Past the edge of what we already knew how to make, into the deep forest, looking for the lives that were there long before anyone arrived to name them — not animals to decorate a ring with, but lives old enough to be owed something. Awe is the honest word for it.

Spirits of Life is what came back. A hole left open at the top so the smoke could leave and the stars could get in.

Then we hung a bell inside it. A house small enough to carry. The whole piece is one shelter, built as a shelter is built: the cone raised first, the poles crossing at the smoke hole, the door set into one side. It is not a charm shaped like a tent. It is a tent, at 45 mm, with a floor you can see up into and a roof you could pass a thread of smoke through.

2. It actually rings. A bell hangs inside the lodge, and the silver cone is its body. The note is bright and clear and travels further than a piece this size has any right to — and because the bell is inside the house, the house is the instrument. This is the part that makes people keep picking it up.

3. The poles, carved one at a time. At the crown the lodge poles cross and splay open, each one cut separately, with real air between them. They are what the cord threads through, so the piece hangs from its own architecture rather than from a soldered-on loop.

4. Two gold bands, where the lashings go. Two lines of 24K fire-gilding wrap the cone exactly where a real lodge is bound — and the upper band thickens into a short gilded whipping at the front, the way cord doubles back on itself when it is tied off. Gold used as structure, not as sparkle.

5. The door. A gilded arch with a fine beaded edge frames a dark open doorway, with a single gold rivet set above it. It is the only opening in the front of the piece, and your eye goes there every time — which is correct. A door is supposed to be the thing you look at.

6. The animals on the walls. Carved into the panels: a bird with its wings spread wide, and a bison standing heavy and low. They are cut flat and simple, the way marks get made when someone is drawing on hide with something hard — the lives outside the lodge, put on the inside of the wall by whoever was sheltering from them.

7. Chevrons round the hem. A band of carved zigzag runs all the way round the lower edge, deep-cut and oxidised. It gives the cone a base, and it is the first thing that catches light when the piece swings.

8. Hides, not sheet metal. The panels are finished at alternating brightness — some darkened, some left bright — so the cone reads as separate skins stitched together rather than one smooth surface. Up close you can see where each panel ends.

9. Two ways to live with it. On the leather cord it is a pendant. Off it, it is an object: hang it from a bag, a rear-view mirror, a door handle, the end of a pack. Very little jewellery survives being taken off. This does.

The Meaning

In an old forest, sound is how you know you are not alone.
