Built for the smallest finger. A tail ring has nowhere to hide. The band has to stay slim or the hand looks crowded, and everything that makes the piece worth wearing has to happen inside a few millimetres. We kept the band narrow and put all the weight of the work into the head.

2. The garuda's head, carved in the round. Beak, brow ridge, the set of the eyes — cut so the face holds an expression rather than a shape. At this scale most makers simplify. We did the opposite, and the head is the reason the ring works.

3. Gold on the parts that are barely there. The eyes, the ridge of the brows and the two curving horns are fire-gilded in 24K gold. These are the smallest surfaces on the piece, and gilding them is genuinely rare work — the gold has to stop dead at a line under a millimetre wide. A fraction too far and the face closes up. Done right, the gold is what makes the bird look back at you.

4. A garnet set into the brow. A natural garnet sits at the centre of the forehead, between the two gilded horns, set by hand into silver that was carved first. Against the darkened silver it reads almost black, then catches the light and goes deep red.

5. Feathers the whole way down. The band is not plain. Feathers are carved along its length, layered and slightly lifted, so the ring keeps moving even when the hand is still — the body of the bird continuing round the finger and finishing in a carved tail.

6. One line of gold, all the way round. A single fire-gilded line follows the band from head to tail. It gains nothing structurally. What it does is tie the head to the body, so the whole ring reads as one animal instead of a carved head on a plain hoop.

The Meaning

The garuda hatches already able to fly. It does not grow into its strength — it arrives with it. In China a ring worn there is said to keep away the “small people” — the petty, the two-faced, the quiet trouble people make for each other.
